Based on product characteristics, tire rim degradation doesn't occur suddenly, but rather is the result of accumulated stress over time. While the vehicle is in motion, the rims constantly withstand vertical load pressure, horizontal steering impact, and the centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation. These forces continuously act on specific areas of the rim, gradually forming "stress concentration zones"—such as the toe where the rim meets the tire and around the bolt holes.
Over time, the metal structure in stress concentration areas gradually undergoes microscopic changes, leading to metal fatigue, which ultimately manifests as a decline in rim performance. This decline, like aging in the human body, is subtle in the early stages, but once it exceeds a critical threshold, it can lead to serious safety issues that cannot be addressed with a "set it and forget it" approach.
"Narrowing" refers to the shrinkage of the inner diameter of a rim due to long-term stress. When this shrinkage exceeds 3mm, the fit between the rim and the tire becomes seriously compromised: a gap will form at the toe, which once fitted tightly, reducing the tire's airtightness. This not only increases the risk of slow air leaks but also causes the tire to wobble while driving.
Even more dangerously, when this shrinkage exceeds 3mm, the force distribution between the tire and the rim becomes completely unbalanced, concentrating the impact force on a specific part of the tire, triggering a chain reaction. In real-world repair cases, some expired rims have experienced shrinkage of up to 10mm. Such rims have already lost their safe load-bearing capacity and could potentially cause fatal accidents.
The harm caused by reduced diameter
Most frighteningly, after the reduced diameter tires have expired, their structural strength decreases dramatically. At high speeds or on bumpy roads, this can lead to "tire rim explosion." The rim can instantly break, causing the vehicle to lose balance and potentially causing serious accidents such as rollovers and collisions.
This poses a significant threat to the driver, pedestrians, and other vehicles on the roadside. For tire repairers, expired rims are also a real headache. During tire replacement, expired rims can break suddenly during the removal or installation of bolts due to their fragile structure, potentially causing injuries.
Second, during every vehicle maintenance session, have the repair technician inspect the rims for signs of shrinkage, deformation, or cracks. Any shrinkage exceeding 3mm must be replaced immediately; simply using them for a while is not an option.
Safety is paramount. Although tire rims are inconspicuous, they are an important guarantee for vehicle safety. Only by paying attention to the service life of tire rims and promptly eliminating expired tire rims can we fundamentally avoid safety accidents caused by tire rim problems and ensure that every trip can be completed safely.
